Amazon is reportedly prepping new Amazon Kindle Fire tablets, including a possible 10.1-inch model, as well as a smartphone, Topeka analyst Brian White said in a research note Monday.
“Originally launched in 4Q11, the Kindle Fire is only available with a seven-inch screen and we believe a larger screen size version is coming this summer,” White said in his note. “In fact, there could be two or possibly three versions of the Fire released with this launch and at least an eight-inch version appears to be in the cards.” White also said that Topeka’s research suggests that Amazon is working on building a smartphone that “could prove to be more sophisticated than many smartphones on the market.” It’s unclear exactly what White meant by that statement, however, since he doesn’t follow up with any hardware details on the phone.
Presumably, Amazon’s smartphone would run either NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 chip or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor, two of the most powerful mobile processors on the market today. We’d also guess Amazon’s smartphone would support 4G LTE networks, since AT&T and Verizon currently employ support for the wireless technology in high-end smartphones and Sprint’s also working on building out its own LTE network.
Unfortunately, none of what White says is particularly shocking or new. We’ve already heard that Amazon may be preparing a larger 8.9-inch tablet, as well as a possible 10-inch quad-core device, and one analyst already claimed Amazon will launch a smartphone sometime this year.
We certainly won’t be surprised if Amazon does decide to enter the smartphone market. The online retailer has an incredible eco-system that spans from its own Android app store to a music store, video rental service and more. What would you want from an Amazon smartphone?
